| My name is Peter Dearman. I am an EFL teacher living in Taiwan. This is my personal piece of the Web, and here is where I have started to stake my online camp-out. It is a gradual process for me. Living away from my home is a bit tough sometimes, so mostly these pages represent an attempt to not be invisible. If someone wants to know what kind of a person I am these days, these pages should help them figure that out. The Internet was supposed to bring us closer together, so here is my attempt to participate in that great idea. | |
I come from Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where I did very well in school and not badly otherwise. After some Bohemian years in Montreal, I vamoosed to Korea to teach English. It was the Canadian thing to do. I've been basically living in Asia ever since. Why? It's hard to say. Some of the cultural issues involved are pretty complex to work out. But one thing for sure is, there are quite a few people like myself, who choose to divorce themselves from North American culture for an extended period of time. We may not all be running away from demons, but I think there would be some truth in saying that a lot of us are running away from the hegemonic thought monster that is American popular culture. We like it too, but see it as being similar to a narcotic drug. Living over here, I don't feel as much guilt for participating in the ruin of the world. Of course, I am as guilty as ever, but I don't feel it the way I do when living back home. I suppose this will change when I get my life properly synchronized, and my occupation, abode and quest for meaning in life all harmonized. I hope to be living in Canada when that happens.

Beagle? This was my nickname in elementary school, and I have decided to resurect it for use in chatting to strangers on the Internet. I started the GoBeagle Web site a few years ago, but this further ostentacious use of my old nickname is a more recent symptom of my urge to scream about politics and stuff. I also use these other aliases sometimes: dearpeter, taiwanster, bubbalize. |

About the site: This is not an attempt to be a fancy Web page. Follow the links if you want to see my Web designs. This page uses an annoying left-hand frame to keep you smothered in my footprint. This is because I use the site myself a lot, to post photos, update my blog and other things. If you don't like the design (contrived dorkiness), that's too darn bad. |
